Publishing My Memoir “A Life in 30 Languages” as Dual Language Books - Tim Keeley | PG 2023
The role of comprehensible input in promoting foreign language learning/acquisition is well established. When I began my polyglot journey 50 years ago, I made extensive use of dual language books. They remain an excellent source of comprehensible input at any level, from beginner to advanced. Thus, I decided to create dual language books of my memoir A Life in 30 Languages in dozens of languages to provide greater benefits to language learners beyond what can be gained from reading about my lifelong language-learning journey. The presentation will include a discussion of how to structure dual language books to optimize their usefulness and various learning strategies tailored to your level in the target languages.
Having learned Cuban Spanish, in South Florida, Tim Keeley’s Polyglot Journey began in earnest when he studied Portuguese, French, and German while attending university in Colombia. Since then, Tim has been immersed in over 30 languages, traveled to 99 countries, studied at 8 universities, and worked around the globe. As a professor of cross-cultural management at universities in Japan, China, and Thailand, Tim’s research focuses on foreign language acquisition and cultural adaptation. His publications have received global recognition, consistently ranking within the top 2% in Academia.edu. Tim has lived in Japan for 42 years and became a Japanese citizen. The first words you utter in a foreign language will naturally give off an impression of your overall ability as a speaker. How do you sound? Are you using one-word or generally short answers to common questions? Well, it may not fully represent all your hard work with this language. In fact, moving from beginner to intermediate or advanced levels is sometimes a question of stringing more words...

Learning one foreign language well is quite an undertaking. All the same, many of us catch the bug and want to learn several. I bet I’m not the only one who’s drawn up a list of target tongues and who has also hoped that with each one, things will get easier. But what difference, exactly, does experience make? In this exploration of the fruits and frustrations of learning many languages, I’ll s...

What it seems like, just from the picture drawn in the first 8 minutes, is that once you've learned enough to go from ILR 0 to ILR 0+, or CEFR 0 to a really shaky CEFR A1, the rest of the picture just kinda draws itself once you've got the input going in, and once speakers are understanding your output. If you're afraid of mistakes, do it scared

I'm not sure where this myth came from that Einstein wasn't good at mathematics. Einstein was an incredible mathematician, and he had to do a ton of incredibly dense calculations to work out his two theories of relativity. Obviously he wasn't as specialized as the mathematicians working on pure math-that wasn't his job-but that's a very different thing than saying "he wasn't particularly good at it." It's simply not possible to be a top-level physicist without a deep understanding of mathematics.
